Maria Elisabeth Wrede (b. Salzburghofen, Germany 1898 — d. Paris, France 1981) was of Austrian origin but lived most of her life and died in Paris. She was as student of Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant andwas part of the circle of Paul Valéry and Ivan and Claire Goll and as well as being friends with the painter Robert Delaunay and his wife Sonja Delaunay-Terk. Wrede was known for her portraits, mainly in pencil and watercolour, of famous people, such as Jean Cocteau, Paul Valéry and his wife, André Maurois, Colette and Picasso. Wrede’s drawings are included in other travel accounts, such as Cyclades by Aloys de Marignac of 1936.
