Abelard Press was founded in New York in 1948 by Lew Schwartz. In 1953 the firm merged with Henry Schuman, Inc. to form Abelard-Schuman, Inc. The firm was acquired by the International Textbook Company (later Intext) in 1969. In 1974 Intext was purchased by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., which in turn was purchased by Harper & Row (now HarperCollins) in 1978.
